Proper Keyword Research

Keyword research is one of the most important process of the search engine optimization campaign and can make or break a website. If you are using irrelevant keywords then how do you expect people or search engines to find your website. If you use keywords that are very strong keywords but there is so much competition for those keywords, it still may not rank you to where you would like to be because the competition is so tough for those specific keywords.  Then there are also keywords that have a good amount of traffic but can be real easy to rank for (low hanging fruit) because there is no competition for those keywords.  There are many different phases for proper keyword research:

Keyword Analysis – Experiment and determine which keywords people may use in the search engines to find a particular website.  You will want to search for keywords that have traffic but not too much competition so you can stay ahead of the competing websites.  Also you will want to use different variations of the keywords such as “Search Engine Management” Search Engine Optimization” “Search engine Optimization Technique.”  These are all different variations of the phrase Search Engine Optimization.

Qualify Your Customers – You will want to have a great list of keywords to focus your search engine campaign on and the best way to find out which keywords and phrases are going to drive the website the most traffic is to survey past customers or potential customers.  This will also help you find out which keywords are the money making keywords and which keywords are the non money makers.  Once you find the keywords that are converting the best, stick with those.

Using Keyword Research Tools To Apply The Correct Keywords – There are many different tools online that you can use for free to find out which keywords people are typing into the search engines to find particular websites.  Overture and Wordtracker are excellent tools that will help you find the best keywords that will be strong and relevant to your website.  Using these tools will provide you with more detailed information about which keywords are hot and which keywords are cold.  You can use these tools to keep up with the search engine process and keep everything up to date.

Keyword Selection – The next step is to record all the keywords that you are using onto a spreadsheet.  Now you can track and see which keywords are the ones generating the most traffic and have the most conversion percentage.  You can also see which keywords are not producing any traffic and you can then remove those keywords and replace those with new keywords to start testing and trying to find more strong keywords that will generate traffic to your website.
