Information Retrieval (IR) has been used by the major commercial search engines to gain information from all of the websites on the web today. These retrieval systems were primarily used in government owned labs, computers in research facilities, and also computers in libraries. These systems relied on two major components to function properly and to give better search results.
Popularity – If a certain web sites have many links to it because it provides quality content and is referred to by many other websites in the same topic, then the popularity is increased which helps with the search engine process.
Relevance – Once the search query has been typed in by the user, the search engines will find all related articles, web pages that have content related to the keywords that you are searching for. The more quality content that is related to those keywords the better the search engines will rank your site. If you do not have quality content, your rank will drop lower and your website will experience less traffic.
